The Godfather of Soul. Soul Brother #1. Mr. Dynamite. The Hardest Working Man in Show Business. James Brown had many regal titles in life yet none truly do justice to his monumental impact on music or presence in the world. His musical influence alone is staggering. His stage moves can be seen in everyone from Mick Jagger to Michael Jackson, he almost single handedly created the funk genre, and people still sample his old records to this very day (and probably always will). Add to that his cultural significance as a man who started with nothing, served time in prison, and then went on to become a pioneering African-American entrepreneur and role model, and you have the makings of one of the great American stories of all time. Which is probably why the new James Brown bio-pic Get On Up, which opens today and stars 42’s Chadwick Boseman, got made in the first place. So in honor of the new movie let’s take a look back at the 10 greatest contributions of one of the greatest musicians of all time, ladies and gentlemen, Mr. James Brown.
