London based singer FKA twigs made her subtle accession into music in 2012 with the release of her first EP appropriately titled EP1. Her music is wildly imaginative, her videos are visually and mentally stimulating, and her art represents her inner most thoughts exaggerated in poetry and haunting imagery. She writes, produces and directs her music and videos and was recently nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize, which honors the best albums released this year from a British or Irish artist. twigs may be in the limelight for dating Twilight actor Robert Pattinson but her songs will most certainly be her legacy. Find out who FKA twigs is and why you need to pay attention to her music.
WHO is FKA twigs?
Tahliah Debrett Barnett was born on January 16, 1988 in Gloucestershire, England. Her stage name “twigs” has been a long-running nickname she received because of the sound her bones make when they crack (ummm, ouch). The “t” in “twigs” is stylized as under case “t” because her old b-girl name was “little t” and she added “FKA” which stands for “Formerly Known As” at the request of The Twigs, pop musician sisters who make music for kids. She began her career as a dancer in London and danced for Jessie J and Kylie Minogue but quit to pursue music full-time.
WHAT is her album?
twigs’ debut album LP1 was released in August 2014 by Young Turks, the same producers who work with the likes of The xx, Sampha and SBTRKT. Each track contains twigs’ signature airy angelic voice that carries critic messages in her simplistic lyrics. Her videos add another dimension to her remarkable songs by vividly depicting the often dark and bold underlying themes in her music. It is best not to decipher but to embrace each song with open ears in order to soak in all that her music has to offer.
