VH1's Suggested New Year's Resolutions For Music's Biggest Stars

With 2015 so fresh and full of possibilities, now is the perfect time to make some resolutions. Go to the gym more, plan a college reunion trip, get a promotion or — in Ariana Grande's case — enunciate. If these music superstars listened to our proposed New Year's resolutions for them, (let's face it) the world would be a better place...and sound much clearer.

But seriously Sam Smith, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, at least consider our suggestions to make this year your best yet. Have we ever steered you wrong before? (No. The answer is no.) Read on to explore the resolutions we cooked up for nine artists that we firmly believe will cause nothing but slayage in the best way possible.

Ariana Grande: Enunciate more.

We love you, Ari, but you've got to improve that diction. Your music is already wonderful because of your out-of-this-world pipes and ability to whistle Whitney-style, but think how next level it would be if we could comprehend your lyrics! That way, we won't think you're talking about baking flan, comets and sewing cranes.

Beyoncé: Stay flawless.

Honestly, what's wrong with Queen Bey? Nothing. Our resolution for the "Drunk in Love" singer is to keep serving life to us on a silver platter while wearing rollerblades and singing about elevator shenanigansAfter all, she did wake up like this.

Katy Perry: Bring back the dessert theme.

We got a (delicious) taste of it with her "Birthday" lyric video last year, but we're ready for Perry to deliver the pop hits and baked goods imagery. There's never been a music video tastier than 2010's "California Gurls," and we're hungry — literally — for more. With Perry performing at this year's Superbowl halftime show, we spot a sweet opportunity to cover the world's largest stage in candy. We can just picture Perry sliding down on a life-size Fruit Roll-Up now. She's basically a modern Willy Wonka.

Sam Smith: Collaborate.

Smith was one of 2014's biggest breakout stars, and we see why with his lovely voice, feels-inducing songs and British charm. However, there's still one thing missing from his repertoire: a kick-ass collaboration.  Smith arguably has the fluidity to pair well with any artist thrown his way, from safe choices like Ed Sheeran to more experimental options like Skrillex or Jay-Z. We personally suggested a Beyoncé collaboration when we discussed dream duets a few months back, and she's still our No. 1 option. C'mon — "Stay With Yoncé." We can picture it now.

Taylor Swift: Write a song about the love between two bEsTiEs~*.

We're so glad Swift has (at least publicly) ditched the loser boyfriends in favor of best friends like Karlie Kloss and Selena Gomez, who all do fun activities like bake cookies and probably listen to Vitamin C on repeat. We think this girl power should inspire Swift to pen a smash about how men come and go, but gal pals are 4ever. In fact, a song like that might just give Vitamin C's "Graduation (Friends Forever)" a worthy opponent for the ultimate BFF jam.

Nicki Minaj: Create more epic music videos.

Minaj shook things up in December when she released The Pinkprint Movie. The 16-minute music video combines three songs from her latest album The Pinkprint  "The Crying Game," "I Lied" and "Grand Piano" — and details a crumbling relationship that gives insight into Minaj's own break-up with boyfriend of 12 years Safaree Samuels. The swooping, emotionally devastating clip is unlike anything an artist released in 2014. Minaj should keep this momentum going by releasing more lengthier videos that use multiple songs to tell one story. With the deeply nuanced and varied tracks on The Pinkprint, we doubt this will be an issue.

Selena Gomez: Release an album that will knock our socks off.

With a new record contract with Interscope and confirmation that she is back in the studio, it looks like Gomez is officially working on a follow-up to 2013's Stars Dance. However, we're hoping she doesn't opt for the same vapid nightclub cheese as her first solo album. With her dark and unabashedly honest new single "The Heart Wants What It Wants" (reportedly about her tumultuous relationship with Justin Bieber), Gomez is taking more risks musically — and she should definitely keep that energy up. If Gomez swaps empty lyrics and beats for confessions and compelling sounds, she could create a first-rate break-up album remnant of Adele's 21. Hey, who says she can't?

Rihanna: Release an album. Period.

RiRi, it's been over two years since Unapologetic and the Navy is getting antsy. With all of your #R8 teasings and rumblings about when an eighth LP will drop, fans and critics alike are ready to hear something. Anything! We trust any record Rihanna makes will be solid, so at this point we're just dying for new music on the radio and in our lives. It's getting pretty damn hard to find love in a Rihanna-less place.

Britney Spears: Instagram more iconic videos.

The pop princess/sunshine queen was basically a pioneer last year for her legendary Instagram videos featuring Oscar-worthy impressions, bored mom woes and world travels. (Some might call the clips a mix between "artsy-fartsy" and  "terms of endearment.") We vote that Spears resolves to upload one new video per week of her doing life-changing things like talking about heart-covered shoes. She will fix all the world's problems.
