“I’m having a really, really good night,” Sam Smith gushed as he accepted the Grammy for Song of the Year. Sure he swept the awards by taking home four statuettes, but the “Stay With Me” singer also had an extra reason to celebrate. Sam received an unforgettable pre-show surprise from none other than music icon Stevie Wonder!
It all went down just before the 57th Annual Grammy live telecast on Sunday, when Stevie treated the new nominee to an impromptu serenade. Sam was still glowing when he visited VH1 on the red carpet moments later. “The most amazing just happened to me,” he told us. “Stevie Wonder asked me to come into his room. I went into his room and he’s singing my song to me.” To his credit, Sam did what most of us would do— he reached for his phone to document the precious moment!
It’s a hell of an honor coming from a man like Stevie, who was saluted by the Grammy Recording Academy in a television special set to air next Monday (February 16th) at 9 PM EST. Be sure to tune in, but first watch Sam tell this adorable story in the clip!
