The 20 Worst Met Costume Gala Gowns

Last night, the most rich and famous and fashionable showed up at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the annual Costume Institute Ball. Last night’s theme was “Punk: Chaos to Couture” and let’s just say amid all the couture, there was certainly a lot of chaos…and a lot of gross.

What makes the yearly Met Costume Gala such an exciting event isn’t just the numerous celebrities who show up in one place, but the fact that it’s kind of the one night a year that people are encouraged to wear couture in public like it’s a normal thing. Because couture is on the cutting edge of fashion and design, this means that the looks are not only often over the top–but they can also be hot messes.

The trick of acing the Met Costume Ball is to find a dress that is daring and risky, but not unflattering or straight up hideous. Madonna, Anne Hathaway and Gwyneth Paltrow all aced this year’s punk theme, but Kim Kardashian, Ashley Olsen and Nicki Minaj might have gone more “yuck” than punk.

Check out the gallery and see if you agree that these looks are too much or if you think they aren’t enough.
