John Oliver Takes Over 'The Daily Show': 5 Other Important British Invasions

Starting tonight, John Oliver is going to be taking over The Daily Show from Jon Stewart. Oliver claims that he just wants to hold the desk down for Stewart and to "make sure [the] building is not on fire both physically and metaphorically." However, this wouldn't be the first British invasion on American soil that started out in polite earnest. We came up with five other monumental British invasions that changed American life as we know it.

Lest you're afraid that John Oliver is set to take over Jon Stewart's chair for good, Oliver's Daily Show hosting gig only a summer thing. Jon Stewart merely needs eight weeks off from work so he can direct his first feature film. Stewart should be back in the saddle in a few months time unless Oliver really is a devious conquerer (or unless Oliver really does burn the building down).

The Daily Show with guest host John Oliver airs tonight on Comedy Central at 11/10 C.
