It’s been nearly three months since the video of NFL running back Ray Rice abusing his wife Janay was released. Recently, Rice has been reinstated in the NFL, while the family continues to attempt moving forward. Today anchor Matt Lauer recently sat down with Janay Rice, who continues to support her husband, and her mother Candy Palmer who weighs in on the severity of her daughter’s situation.

Although she supports her daughter, a tearful Palmer admitted that she “was kind of sick” upon seeing the initial footage. Lauer proceeded to explain that Janay instantly became the face of domestic violence in the US, to which Palmer replied: “I totally understand how people look at that and think that’s who she is, but I know her – and she’s not.”

Rice opened up about the difficulty of keeping quiet for months, during the intense media coverage on the domestic situation between her and her husband. “That’s been the hardest part, is having so much of your life made public and have it all be negative – not having control over anything that has to do with you,” said Rice. She says that she and her husband saw the first video, taken outside the elevator, and “knew [a leak] was going to happen.” However, she refuses to watch the second tape. “I’m not going to let the public bring me back there,” she said.

Rice maintains that her husband didn’t abuse her before the incident and hasn’t since February 14. Today she stands by him as they attempt to move on and restore their reputations, while Rice looks for a new NFL team. Watch Janay’s Today interview above.
