Could Lifetime’s Whitney Houston Biopic Actually Be… Good?

After her tragic death in 2012, the legendary Whitney Houston is being remembered by — you guessed it! — another Lifetime movie. However, after watching the first trailer, we’re hoping the film isn’t as much of a dud as the network’s recent Aaliyah biopic.

Starring The Butler’s Yaya DaCosta (an America’s Next Top Model alum) and directed by the fabulous Angela Bassett, the film will chronic the rise and fall of the music icon. Diving into issues like her addiction and tumultuous relationship with Bobby Brown means the movie should be a truthful retelling of the good, the bad, and the ugly from Houston’s life. But there’s also some lighthearted fun (cue the “I-I-I-I wanna dance with somebody”) to break up the heaviness. The film premieres on Lifetime on January 17.

See how DaCosta and other actors compare to the stars they’ve portrayed on TV in the gallery below.
