These Celebrities Are So Rich They Don't Need Side Hustles, But They Got Them Anyway

In 2014, celebrities can't be one-trick ponies. Nowadays, movies are pirated, CDs are leaked, and endorsement deals fall through with one nude photo. Take it from Oprah: If you want to build an empire, you must have numerous side hustles.

This year, a number of famous folks, including a legendary movie vet who realized he needed to take advantage of the technology of 2014, turned a fortune with their quirky passion projects. From a cooking show to a multi-million dollar game, these are the definitive celebrity side hustles of 2014.

Kim Kardashian, Kim Kardashian Hollywood

Laugh all you want about Kim K’s jaunt into game development exclusively for mobile devices. The app, which is free to download but players are encouraged to buy in-app purchases to advance, makes $700,000 per day. Players get to create their own avatar, explore Hollywood, and become stars themselves, all while being supported by Kim Kardashian. It’s not uncommon for players to start feeling like IRL Kim is one of their own besties.

Thanks to the game, which launched in June 2014 and has made over $43 million since, Kardashian not only makes money off of the players, but she enforces her personal brand.

Blake Lively, Preserve

[caption id="attachment_449463" align="aligncenter" width="615"][Photo Credit: Preserve] [Photo Credit: Preserve][/caption]Blake Lively was labeled as the next mayonnaise princess who’s got some life advice, a la Gwyneth Paltrow with Goop, when Preserve hit the information superhighway. Holistic approaches and cleanses for your baby are great ideas if you’re a celebrity, but middle Americans can’t exactly relate, right? Except Lively’s Preserve is less pandering, and more chock full of healthy ingredients and, if you feel like splurging on $40 salt, easy steps to feel more like a celebrity yourself.

Karlie Kloss, Coco Kookie

Karlie Kloss is the exception, though. Her her latest concoction, the Coco Kookie, sold under the umbrella of Momofuku’s Milk Bar. And, the sprinkle on top of that delicious baked good? This one is for a good cause. Every tin sold gives 60 school meals to children around the world.

Pharrell, GIRL fragrance

[caption id="attachment_449465" align="aligncenter" width="615"][Photo Credit: Beauty Mart] [Photo Credit: Beauty Mart][/caption]He’s a singer and a producer, he built careers for countless musicians, and he rocked a hat so big you can sneak a whole Thanksgiving meal into a movie underneath it. What can’t Pharrell do? Make a perfume for lads and ladies that sells for $135 at Sephora? Think again, my friend. His scent, GIRL, is a wood-based scent that crosses the boundary between masculine and feminine.

Big Sean, IDFWU App

His song, “I Don’t F*** With You,” is a fierce break-up anthem. And now, his photo-editing app, IDFWU, lets you blur out anybody’s face that did you dirty, and paste “#IDFWU” over their mugs.

Drake, OVO Lint Roller

When Drake pulled out a lint roller at the Raptors/Nets game in April of this year, people had a field day. Instead, Drake figured YOLO, you only lint once. In turn, Bounce decided to roll out some limited edition OVO-branded lint rollers.

Reese Witherspoon, Pacific Standard Production Company

[caption id="attachment_449461" align="aligncenter" width="615"][Photo Credit: Getty Images] [Photo Credit: Getty Images][/caption]A wonderfully growing trend in Hollywood is women, including Reese Witherspoon, asking production companies, “What do you have in store with women?” And, though incredibly disappointed by their answers, taking the matter into their own hands. Case and point, Witherspoon’s Pacific Standard Production Company. This was the first year that the company launched projects, Gone Girl and Wild, and in case you missed everyone raving about both films, they killed it. Wild is considered Witherspoon’s comeback film, but her production company has a lot more films in the works, proving that Witherspoon isn’t just a talented actress, but an incredible producer as well.

Kelis, Holiday Feast with Kelis on the Cooking Channel

[caption id="attachment_449462" align="aligncenter" width="615"][Photo Credit: The Cooking Channel] [Photo Credit: The Cooking Channel][/caption]Kelis can throw down in a recording studio, but she can also throw down in the kitchen. It’s not just a hobby anymore, either, she’s got her own special on the Cooking Channel, where she fixes up jalapeno truffle mac n’ cheese and brown sugar cayenne lamb chops. Holiday Feast with Kelis aired earlier this month with Kelis, a certified chef, creating incredibly delicious looking dishes.

Jessica Alba, The Honest Company

[caption id="attachment_449455" align="aligncenter" width="615"][Photo Credit: Getty Images] [Photo Credit: Getty Images][/caption]There’s something they don’t tell you about becoming a parent: you’re not the only one. There are others who know more about childbirth and raising a kid, because they’ve gone through it. Seven years ago, Jessica Alba used a popular baby detergent, but broke out in a rash. She had been searching for better products since, and, completely unimpressed with the offerings, she opened The Honest Company in 2012. The Honest Company offers eco-friendly, clean, and affordable diapers, lotions, and soaps for a bundle of joy, and this year it’s more successful than ever. According to Dow Jones Venturewire, the company is now valued at just under $1 billion.

Tom Hanks, Hanx Writer

He created the app because he missed the feel and the sound of an old typewriter. There have not been satisfying sounds while writing your novella on a tablet, until now. You can hide the cursor and turn off the delete button if you’re feeling particularly old school.
