La La Land Leads the Oscar Nominees, But the Academy Learned a Lesson From Last Year

#OscarsSoLaLaLand.

If you thought the La La Land buzz was anywhere near done, think again. Earlier it was revealed that the neo-musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone snagged a total of 14 Oscar nominations - a record amount - tying it with the 1996 classic Titanic. Unless you've been living under a rock, between the social media and the Golden Globes craze last month, it's no surprise that the movie landed as many nods as it did.

However, what is a surprise (and a sweet treat), is that it appears after a two-year dry spell of diversity, a total of 10 Black actors and directors are nominated in several acclaimed categories. Following the disappointment of the Golden Globes, actor Mahershala Ali will have a shot at another win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Moonlight is nominated in a total of nine categories while Fences is nominated for four and Hidden Figures for three. This places Denzel Washington (best actor), Viola Davis (best actress and best supporting lead actress), Ruth Negga (best actress), and Naomie Harris and Octavia Spencer all in the running for varying acting awards. Winning!
