'VH1 Trailblazer Honors' Kicks Off Women's History Month By Honoring Filmmaker Ava DuVernay

This one-hour special will air on International Women’s Day, Friday, March 8th at 9PM ET/PT on VH1 and Logo.

The VH1 Trailblazer Honors is an annual tradition of celebrating those who have gone before and forged a pathway for others while achieving greatness themselves. Previous honorees include the groundbreaking screenwriter, director and producer Ryan Murphy, author and activist James Baldwin, The ACLU Organization, performer and activist Cyndi Lauper, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin who are social activists and parents of Trayvon Martin, Jason Collins, who was the first out professional male athlete in a major U.S. sport, and many more.

This year, it's all about the ladies. That's right, the VH1 Trailblazer Honors is recognizing all things female empowerment. (Alexa, play literally anything by the Spice Girls, I'm in the mood for some girl power.)

The event will celebrate those who have dedicated their time and steadfast commitment to the women's movement. This year's Trailblazer Honors will be centered around the past year's breakthroughs in female empowerment, addressing the landmark achievements of this year's honorees.

And first up on our list of women to honor? Filmmaker Ava DuVernay. Talk about kicking off Women's History Month with a bang!

The Academy Award nominated director, producer and screenwriter behind the films Selma, 13TH and A Wrinkle In Time, Ava DuVernay, will be the first honoree to whom “VH1 Trailblazer Honors” pays tribute to kick off Women’s History Month. She is also the first African-American female director to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award and the first African-American female director to have her film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.

“VH1 Trailblazer Honors” will celebrate today’s most respected politicians, entertainers, artists, activists, allies and icons who have dedicated their time and steadfast commitments to the women’s movement and beyond. The one-hour special will air on International Women’s Day, Friday, March 8th at 9PM ET/PT on VH1 and Logo.
