Rihanna was the recipient of MTV’s 2016 Video Vanguard Award and there to present her with it was none other than Drake. Drake, who was apparently stuck in traffic earlier in the night, made it just in time to give RiRi MTV’s highest honor and delivered the sweetest speech about her for the occasion.
Drake revealed that he first met Rihanna in 2005, when she was shooting her “Pon De Replay” video. “She succeeds by doing something that no one in this industry does, which is being herself,” he said. “She’s someone I’ve been in love with since I was 22 years old. She’s one of my best friends in the world. All my adult life, I’ve looked up to her even though she’s younger than me. She’s a living breathing legend.” Those are some pretty powerful words, if you ask us.
“MTV, this is such an amazing night, an amazing moment in my career,” Rihanna said during her acceptance speech. “This is the first Vanguard to land anywhere close to my country,” she continued, thanking her fans, Jay Z, friends and more.
Rihanna put on four separate performances throughout the night, singing medleys of her biggest hits. She opened the night’s festivities with “Don’t Stop the Music” and “Only Girl (In the World),” later performing “Rude Boy,” “What’s My Name,” “Work,” “Pour It Up,” “Diamonds” and the soulful “Love on the Brain.”
Drake was the perfect choice to present RiRi with her award, as the two have a number of hits together (“What’s My Name, “Take Care,” “Work,” “Too Good”), as well as a rumored on-again, off-again romance. Drake seemed to try to steal a kiss from RiRi while on the stage with her, but from the looks of it, wasn’t too successful. We’re guessing they’re off-again?
Congratulations to RiRi on her Video Vanguard Award. She’s worked for it!
