Even though today is the Sabbath (Bloody Sabbath), we thought we'd get in the metal spirit a bit early with this video and gallery of Metal Gods Throwing Devil Horns. This tradition of raising your pinky and forefinger while pushing down your ring and middle fingers with your thumb dates back to the earliest days of civilization, when the malocchio was used to ward off evil spirits. The metal community at large adopted this gesture when the late, great Ronnie James Dio was the frontman of Black Sabbath in the late '70s, but its usage can be traced as far back as the 1969 album by the Occult-influenced psychedelic rock band Coven called Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls.
VH1 Classic will be devoting the entire day to a batch of metal-centric programming that will seriously test out your neck's ability to withstand an above-average amount of headbanging. And over on the VH1 App—if you haven't downloaded it yet, what are you waiting for?—all 11 episodes of Metal Evolution are now available for you to watch.
Be sure to check out more National Metal Day coverage right here on the VH1 Music Blog all day tomorrow, 11/11!
