Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl Sings 'My Hero' to Crying Man Onstage
While performing at Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre in Greenwood Village, Colorado, FOO Fighters' singer Dave Grohl noticed an emotional man in his audience and did something beautiful.
The band leader, who's recovering from a broken leg, decided to bring the man up onstage and sing to him.
"I love you man, thank you," Dave said to the crying man, whose name is Anthony. "Holy shit. Fuck that speech I was just about to make. I'm going to sing to you right now. ... I want some real tears."
Dave continued, "You better sing it with me. Don't make me cry because I promised I wouldn't do this. ... I'm going to sing this to your crying grown man ass right now. ... You drunk, emotional mess."
The singer also told the crowd to sing to Anthony as well, which they gladly obliged to doing with cheer.
The FOO Fighters band mate ended the sweet performance by standing up on his crutches and giving the touched man a big hug. Music does indeed, heal all wounds.
UPDATE: 8/19 5:00 P.M.
The man Dave Grohl sang to, Anthony, was reportedly crying not because of the song, but because he had buried his mother six months before. Anthony called into radio station KBCO.fm yesterday and said the following, as reported by NME:
Explaining how he was feeling at the gig, Anthony said: “My mum died about six months ago and I just got back from Europe putting her in her crypt. “He (Grohl) started singing it and I felt all emo.”
Unafraid to admit he was crying, Anthony was however keen to establish the fact that he was not drunk on the night; though he may have been stoned. “I was dead sober,” he said. “I don’t drink. I might have had a little Colorado green but I’m not a drinker.”
“I was crying, I’m not afraid to cry,” Anthony added. “I started getting all teared up. I was trying to hide from him.”
