YOK Artist Lorde Explains Why 'Pure Heroine' Isn't About Boyfriends Or Break Ups

VH1's September You Oughta Know artist Lorde's debut album, Pure Heroine, won't be released in the United States until Monday, September 30, but it's already ranked #9 on the iTunes charts (sitting right behind Lorde's The Love Club E.P. at #8). Even though she's only 16, Lorde is fully aware of the wild expectations and promises that Pure Heroine is "more mature" and "more developed."

"I just feel that it's kind of a more mature collection," she said. "When I wrote [The Love Club] E.P. I was 15 and now I'm going to be 17 in a couple of months, so it's more mature."

However, that doesn't mean that she's straying far from the popular themes of The Love Club. She said, "I always write about stuff that happens to me in my life and there's some stuff that's more intimate and to do with me and a friend or me and a couple friends or it will be stuff that's more directed at, you know, people my age."

That said, she doesn't want to build a name for herself as an artist who sings about boyfriends and break ups. One reason is for privacy's sake, but there's also some strategy involved. Lorde explained,  "Love songs are great and all, but a) They're so difficult to get right and b) That's sort of all anyone does anymore. I think it's always been important to me to do something that felt refreshing and that felt different."
