Madonna And Queen Latifah Join Macklemore & Ryan Lewis For Instant Classic Performance Of "Same Love"

When news broke earlier today that 34 couples would be married during the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis performance at the 2014 Grammy Awards, it almost immediately eclipsed the news that Queen Latifah (!) and Madonna (!!!) would also be joining the group to sing "Same Love." That track, which features vocals from Mary Lambert, is one of the nominees for Song Of The Year, but whether or not it wins that award later on tonight, "Same Love" has certainly cemented its place in not just Grammy history, but the popular culture at large.

As you'll recall, Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and Mary Lambert performed "Same Love" at the VMAs back in August with special guest Jennifer Hudson, so the Grammy organizers had to definitely put in some overtime to figure out how to usurp that memorable performance. Enter Queen Latifah, who served as the officiant for the wedding of the 34 couples who got married, and Madonna, who emerged from backstage near the song's completion and sang the chorus of her 1986 single "Open Your Heart." Madge was dressed like a sparkly cowgirl, complete with a pimp cane, which transformed her into this evening's equivalent of the slightly unhinged yet totally awesome weird aunt that inevitably shows up at every wedding.

The moment was a triumphant one for the 2014 Grammy Award winners for Best New Artist, and also for everyone who believes in equal rights. While "Same Love" may not have taken home the prize for Song Of The Year, there's little doubt that it will end up being the single most memorable moment of the 2014 Grammys.
