Ariana Grande Drops "Focus" Single and Video Just in Time for Halloweekend
Ariana Grande put an end to her 30-day countdown last night when she released her new single "Focus" and its accompanying visuals. Ari has been giving us snippets of "Focus" all month long, and finally, you can hear the sassy single and watch its equally sassy video in its entirety. Bless her.
Ari teamed up with Max Martin, Savan Kotecha, Peter Svensson and Ilya for the song. "Focus" relies heavily on brass instruments, evoking the same audacious tone that Ari set with "Problem," and includes a male vocals chorus. Its video, directed by Hannah Lux Davis, finds Ari with purple-white hair dancing in stilettos and calling on her fellow bbs to take pictures of her taking selfies. Ariana reaches peak diva in this video, and it's glorious.
Some are saying that "Focus" sounds like KC and the Sunshine Band's "That's The Way (I Like It)." My editor, Jordan Runtagh, was a wedding DJ for four years and played KC and the Sunshine Band at many a wedding. Here's what he had to say about the comparisons:
"I have no idea what these people are talking about. I had to play every KC and the Sunshine Band song known to humankind and I think it's ridiculous. It's like, they both have trumpets? That's about it, I guess. And the massive funk factor, of course. People are going to be gettin' down to both tunes for a long long time."
My ears don't detect any similarities other than trumpets, either. Ripoff? I think not.
Ari has kept "Focus" a secret (save the social media snippets) since she first finished it in May, according to this Power 106 interview she gave earlier this week in Los Angeles. Please note the "balls" on her head. She DGAF. What a babe.
