'Girls' Star Jemima Kirke Tells the Story of Her Decision to End a Pregnancy
Even today, people get shy and uncomfortable with the subject of abortion. For many people who've had one, it's a secret. But, like any other part of life, the conversation can only be had when the subject is normalized and stripped of any shame or stigma. That's why Girls star Jemima Kirke joined with the Center for Reproductive Rights' Draw the Line campaign to share her story.
In 2007, Kirke became pregnant with her boyfriend at the time and made the decision to terminate the pregnancy, saying she didn't want to attach herself to that partner or bring a child into a life unprepared for that. Some found her words unclear, so she took to Twitter to clarify.
As someone rightly pointed out, she shouldn't have had to clarify anything.
Kirke isn't the only celebrity who's been brave enough to share this kind of story. Chelsea Handler told the New York Times about her abortion at 16. Sherri Shepherd became emotional when debating with her co-hosts on The View about the topic as "a girl who had a lot of abortions." Kathy Najimy delivered a speech at a Planned Parenthood luncheon about her experience, saying,
It's appalling that we even have to have this conversation, isn't it? I hear the words coming out of my mouth and I am still astonished that we are begging for the basic rights to OUR bodies! It's simply absurd. Some things just shouldn't be questioned. The sun rises in the East, vertical stripes are slimming, chips and salsa are indeed, a food group . . . And women should be able to do what they choose with their own bodies and feel whatever way they do, without threat to that right. Simple.
