Laverne Cox Opens Up About Caitlyn Jenner and the Pressures of Being the Face of the American Transgender Movement

"I’m so grateful that I had the luxury of transitioning in private," the Orange is the New Black star told Entertainment Weeky.

In honor of Pride Month, Entertainment Weekly features Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox on the cover of its latest issue. Besides looking stunning (and reppin' NYC), Cox opens up about love, the pressures of being the face of the American transgender movement, and Caitlyn Jenner.

"I just wonder,” Cox says in the interview, “am I allowed to be a human being?” And she brings up a valid point, given the invasive questions she's been asked in the past about her gender identity and genitalia, the latter which has nothing to do with being transgender.

Many reporters are eager to get Cox's opinion on Jenner's recent public coming out. While she's beyond happy for Jenner, Cox does admit she's lucky she doesn't have to deal with the scrutiny the former Olympian is currently facing. “This is why I’m so grateful that I had the luxury of transitioning in private,” she admits to the magazine. “Because when you transition in the public eye, the transition becomes the story. I’m always disturbed when I see conversations about trans people that focus on surgery. But I believe Caitlyn will transcend this moment.”
