T.I.'s sister, Precious Harris passed away last week after a car accident left her in a coma and her last text message to her brother explains some of the rapper's actions as of late.
A little background. Prior to Precious' death, T.I. had been very vocal on social media about brands like Gucci, Prada and Burberry in light of their recent, seemingly overtly racist designs. In a post about Gucci, T.I. includes a photo of sweater that looks like it was modeled after blackface imagery. The brand has since apologized and issued a statement assuring people that the imagery was unitentional, but T.I. was (and continues to be) livid.
"As a 7 figure/yr customer & long time supporter of your brand I must say...Y’all GOT US f-cked UP!!! APOLOGY NOT ACCEPTED!!!! We ain’t going for this “oops my bad I didn’t mean to be racist and disrespectful towards your people” shit!!! Y’all knew wtf y’all was doin and WE AINT GOING FOR IT!!! We ALL GOTTA Stop buying, wearing, and supporting this piece of sh-t company And ALL PIECE OF SH-T COMPANIES UNTIL THEY LEARN TO RESPECT OUR DOLLARS & VALUE OUR BUSINESS!!!! Our culture RUNS THIS SH-T!!! We (People of color) spend $1.25 TRILLION/year (but are the least respected and the least included) and if we stop buying ANYTHING they MUST correct any and ALL of our concerns. That’s THE ONLY WAY we can get some RESPECT PUT ON OUR NAME!!!! I Don’t Give a F-ck if I gotta wear Target brand shit.... #F-ckGucci"
The rapper then continued to call out other brands who continued to invoke racist imagery in their designs. Like Burberry's sweat shirt that included a noose.
And Prada's racist keychain:
And now a screenshot of his exchange with his sister, makes it clear that T.I. has a good reason for staying mad: His sister was also passionate about the cause.
In a text to her littler brother, Precious wrote, "Hey when I worked at Phipps Plaza they didnt even want black folks in there. All those companies are the same. Y'all rappers started spending and they capitalize on it. I know what I'm talking about."
Then she alleges, "The reason Tom Ford left Gucci was because they developed a division just for y'all rappers. They don't sell that shit to regular customers. If you go in Gucci in New York, you will see."
T.I. captioned the photo of the message, "My last txt from big sis... THIS WHY IM STAYING ON @gucci NECK!!! Cause SHE SAID SO!!!! 🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽em."
Looks like T.I. won't stop fighting these brands any time soon.
