Brandi Gives an Update on Her Marriage and Says Jason's Nothing But Supportive of Her Doing Reality TV

"A lot of players would be like, 'You can do it but I’m not showing up...'"

Brandi Maxiell showed off a different side of herself this year on Basketball Wives LA from feuding with Draya to going at it with Shaunie, but what about her marriage troubles?

VH1 caught up with Brandi about what she thought of the additions to the cast this season, where her marriage stands, and what it's like to deal with infidelity in the professional basketball world.

What changed between season three and season four? It seems like you turnt up more. Did Malaysia say, girl we gotta bring it more?

Brandi Maxiell: I think last season was a surprise for me, I didn’t know what to expect, everything went by so fast and I couldn’t really gather my thoughts. I was guarded last season and I didn’t know anybody, except for Malaysia. This year is totally different because I’m confident. I didn’t know how the world was going to judge me and how they were going to think of me. I think it’s more so, just me feeling confident, and I know the girls now, and secure.

How did you feel about the new additions to the cast this season with Mehgan, Angel, and Patrice being around?

I definitely thought at first Mehgan was a question mark for me but as time went on, what viewers didn't get to see, they don’t get to see all the date nights or, you know chit chats that Megan and I got to have on camera, because they didn’t air it so it looked like we just became friends out the blue. As far as everybody else, I love Patrice, I love her story. Her story with her and Eddie is awesome. I feel like it’s just a different side of the basketball world - what her and Eddie went through. As far as Angel, I feel like Angel kind of, to be honest with you, I feel like Draya kind of ho-ed her out a little bit. [Laughs]

In what way?

I just feel like she left her hanging. You know, Draya brought her onto the cast, and then when Draya brought her onto the cast, she left, and then left her friend there in front of all these women that she doesn’t know, and it was kind of hard on her. [Draya] left her there to defend her in some ways where she wasn’t there. I just felt bad for Angel, because she really didn’t get a fair chance. She came in the middle, and everything was already established. You know, it was unfortunate, we didn’t really get to know her, know her.

A lot was made about Angel being Draya's real friend, do you feel that was true? Was it just a show for show or was it a real life friendship?

To be honest with you, Draya and I used to talk on the phone, like four hours a day, especially when it was filming. I’d never heard Angel’s name before in my life. So, she was new to me. I know Draya’s friends, and I never heard of her before. I’m not saying they’re not friends, I feel they’re friends, and I said that when we were filming, it’s a business friendship.

This season delved deeper into your relationship with your husband Jason, where do things stand with you guys since the show wrapped?

Today, we are working on things. We’re not 100%, we’re not perfect like we once were before. It just takes time, you know we’re doing what we need to do, what we feel that we need to do, what’s best and I’m really taking my time with it, because I don’t want to jump into a situation and then it falls back to what it was before. I’m not rushing because the people want us to get back together, or he wants to. I’m doing what I feel is best for me, because I was the one that was hurt. So we’re just taking our time with it. But, I can say that we are a million times better than when I was filming.

I'm curious about all the infidelity stuff because there was a moment last season, when you were at drinks with Draya and Malaysia, and Draya asked you guys, "Have your men cheated?" and you both we're like, "Yes, of course, are you kidding?" and now it seems you're really going through it, so what changed?

[Laughs] I knew you were going to mention that moment. When we went to drinks last season, and we talked about that, it kind of looked like it was like, "Yeah girl, he cheats, you don’t know?" But it wasn’t like, "Girl, yeah I’m okay with that." It was nothing like that, it was more like, "Dude, he’s a professional athlete and we’ve been through things like any professional athlete couple have been through.

When that stuff went down [with Jason and I] it was before we were married. It was just when he was fresh in the game and we've dealt with you know the groupies, the sidepieces, whatever people want to call it. So, I wasn’t dealing with it in my marriage at that moment with Draya and Malaysia last season. I remember doing my confessionals, they would stop me and be like, "No, you’ve got to stop putting s--- on you, it’s not because of you, it’s him." Once I had my son, it was all about my son. I was like that mom by the book. You know, I did everything right. Every time I had a break I never went on date night, I never did anything that we used to do as a couple. And I went through postpartum [depression] and I really just forgot about him. When you forget about him, and you neglect your husband, you know, they get neglected and they do stupid things, and I think that’s what happened. Even though I feel like it was my fault on what happened, he was supposed to be responsible enough to be my husband, stay faithful and stay, and continue to be the husband that he's supposed to be but we're here. . But, you know, we’re here.

What kind of conversation did you and Jason have before you signed up for Basketball Wives LA?

They wanted me to do the Miami version of Basketball Wives, and I was like,"Eh, no, I don’t know." Then they told me they coming out with the LA show and I was game to do it but I couldn’t film, because I got pregnant. Then the next season, I was just like supermom, so I was like, "No." And then it came up again for the third season, and I was just like, I don’t know. I remember Malaysia was like,"Come on, just do it," and I talked to Jason about it, and he was like, "Do it." I was against it, at first. I was just like I don’t think it’s right, just let me do my business.

He was like, "Just tell your story, just get out there just to say you did it. You just never know what’s next and what opportunity can come with you doing the show." So he was 1000% supportive. He never once said, "No, I’m not doing it, F--- the show." A lot of players would be like, "You can do it but I’m not showing up," that kind of thing. He was supportive, and he’s always been supportive with anything that I do, so I wasn’t surprised at that.

Editor's Note: Jason Maxiell was at the filming of the season four Basketball Wives LA reunion.
