Colbie Caillat's Palms Rise To The Universe In Her New "Hold On" Video

[mtvn_player vid="993026"]

Colbie Caillat made her name writing and recording breezy, slightly crunchy, acoustic guitar-driven tunes like "Bubbly," "Realize" and "Lucky." Her work to date has been successful both on the commercial (6MM albums sold!) and critical (2 Grammy Awards!) fronts, but being a creative artist like she is, it seems like she's ready for a change of pace when it comes to the work that she produces. Enter her new single "Hold On," which sees Caillat exploring a slightly more electronic sound than she has in the past.

Now, that's not to say the You Oughta Know alum has turned into the next Skrillex or anything. Rather, "Hold On" reminds us a bit more of, say, the mid '90s output of Annie Lennox; in particular, this song (co-written by OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder) has a a chorus that certainly recalls "Walking On Broken Glass" (sonically, if not thematically). Lyrically, the song tips its cap to Rihanna's massive smash from the fall of 2011, "Diamonds" (which was coincidentally penned by another member of the You Oughta Know family, Sia Furler), in its embrace of the spiritual power that flows through the stars in the sky. The video has a similarly hippy dippy feel, with Caillat walking barefoot through sand alongside some sisters of Gaia while the universe spins in nodding approval.

It's an interesting pivot in creative direction for Caillat, and one that bodes well for her upcoming album (which does not have a name nor a release date at this point). It's always exciting to see an artist embracing a new muse, and we can't wait to hear more from one of our favorite recording artists out there today!
