The Most Dramatic Social Media Unfollowings in History
In the prehistoric days before social media, blocking texts from your exes and frenemies was the kiss of death. Now, it's unfollowing them on social media, muting them, or even full-on blocking them. If you're feeling particularly masochistic, you can double check who unfollowed or unfriended you using tons of sites and apps connected to your Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts.
While finding out that acquaintances aren't here for your hot takes on politics on comedy, it happens to the best of us. Just be glad that you're not famous! For celebrities, unceremonious and often petty unfollowings often make national news and can even lead fans to jump to crazy conclusions. Blame it on "technical difficulties" all you want - the stans will investigate the true meaning behind every social media faux pas.
President Trump VS. Chrissy Tiegen (and Others!)
Lolllllll no one likes you
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) July 23, 2017
This extremely light trolling of Presiden Trump on his personal account got Tiegen blocked in 2017. This wasn't the first time the two clashed on Twitter. In 2015, Tiegen insulted Trump online, and Trump retweeted an account calling her a "trashy gutter mouth woman." Rosie O'Donnell and author Stephen King are among other high-profile users blocked by POTUS. Many private citizens have also filed a lawsuit alleging that being blocked by the President's official account is a threat to their First Amendment rights.
Selena Gomez and The Weeknd VS. Bella Hadid
In January 2017, Bella Hadid unfollowed Selena Gomez on Instagram just hours after Selena was spotted kissing Bella's ex, The Weeknd. Three months later, The Weeknd and Gomez quietly unfollowed Bella on Instagram. As of this writing, Hadid still follows The Weeknd, and Selena and The Weeknd still follow Bella's sister, Gigi Hadid. Try to untangle that twisted web!
Rob Kardashian VS. Blac Chyna
Summer 2016, while Chyna was still pregnant with their daughter, Dream, Rob unfollowed his baby mama Chyna, and deleted all photos of them together. When Rob & Chyna aired, it was clear that this fight was the culmination of many arguments during her pregnancy. In March 2017, it was reported that the entire Kardashian clan had unfollowed Chyna, despite the couple's reconciliation. Then, in possibly the most dramatic celebrity breakup in history, Rob K began posting revenge porn images of Chyna on his feed. Instagram blocked Rob's account, and Twitter subsequently had his images removed. Blac Chyna received a restraining order from Rob in an L.A. court shortly after.
Liam Hemsworth VS. Miley Cyrus
Miley and Liam's on-again-off-again relationship was a long and twisted journey. The most dramatic moment of all? When in 2013, Miley unfollowed Liam on Twitter, just 3 days before her reps confirmed they had broken off their engagement. The very next day, Hemsworth was spotted making out with actress Eiza Gonzalez. It doesn't get much colder than that.
Rihanna VS. Chris Brown
The former couple's tumultuous relationship led to several unfollowings on social media, between 2012-2013. According to Entertainment Weekly, Brown covered Kanye West's song "Cold" while performing and dropped in his own freestyle verse referencing an "old bitch." (He didn't drop a name, but we're not idiots.) Neither is Rihanna, who unfollowed Brown on Twitter shortly after and wrote, “Aw, poor dat #neaux1currrrr.” But Brown didn't take this lightly, tweeting, "Assumptions! I didn’t say any names so if u took offense to it then its something you feel guilty about." He then unfollowed RiRi right back. The subtweet shade is real.
Ashton Kutcher VS. Demi Moore
In September 2011, RadarOnline was the first to break news that Kutcher had unfollowed Moore on Twitter. This came after reports Kutcher cheated on Moore with a 23-year-old named Sara Leal in San Diego during the couple's sixth anniversary weekend. Moore also unfollowed Kutcher around this period but followed him back at the time RadarOnline broke the story.
Demi Lovato VS. Selena Gomez
In July 2014, Lovato stirred the pot by unfollowing childhood friend Gomez and reportedly tweeting (but later deleting), "Swimming away from your bullshit-bye bitch." She addressed the drama that August on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live. “I think it’s just one of those things where people change and people grow apart,” she told host Andy Cohen. Ouch.
Rob Kardashian and basically his entire family
In 2014, Metro UK reported Rob unfollowed everyone in his family on Twitter except little sister Kylie Jenner and mom Kris. The cutthroat move arrived after the only Kardashian brother had a falling out with his family at the Kimye wedding (which he didn't end up attending). Rob and his sisters reconnected later that year, but it didn't last. In March 2015, Rob posted a photo to his Instagram (that has since been deleted) of Amy Dunne from Gone Girl with the caption, "my sister Kim, the b*tch from Gone Girl." Kim and Khloe responded with humor. When Rob, still reeling from their fallout, refused to attend their trip to Armenia, Kim was spotted walking around with a cardboard cut-out of Rob's head.
Katy Perry VS. Russell Brand
Perry unfollowed her ex-husband on Twitter in January 2012, just days after news of their divorce rocked Hollywood. Things stayed relatively quiet between the two on social media until this past February when Brand — days before Perry's Super Bowl Halftime performance — tweeted, "Super Bowl may be baffling to Brits but half time show will be amazing. Good luck KP." Perry didn't take Brand's words kindly; a source told The Sun (via Daily Mirror), "She couldn't believe he'd say that after everything he put her through." As of 2017, the pair is still not following each other.
Eleanor Calder VS. Louis Tomlinson
Calder disrupted the One Direction fan-base (even though we're still mourning the departure of Zayn Malik!) when she and Tomlinson called it quits in 2015. To add insult to injury, she unfollowed him on Instagram. The couple rekindled their romance in 2017, so we guess it's all water under the social media bridge.
Miley Cyrus VS. Demi Lovato
The former Disney Channel frenemies got us talking in March 2014 when Cyrus abruptly unfollowed Lovato on Twitter. Demi ultimately got the last laugh by tweeting, "Ain't nobody got time fo dat!!! #pettybullshit #toobusykillingit #cutethough [emojis] #NEONLIGHTSTOUR" before unfollowing Cyrus. We wonder if she knew Cyrus was also "killing it" at the time on her Bangerz Tour?
Selena Gomez and Taylor's Squad.
Gomez went on an Instagram unfollowing spree in April 2013, deleting Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Taylor Swift, Ashley Benson, and Vanessa Hudgens from her newsfeed. According to E! Online, she did this to get rid of the bad influences in her life and focus on the good. She has since followed Swift back, and Benson uploaded a chummy picture with Gomez in November 2014. Looks like these friendship circles will forever be a mystery.
