Get TF Outta Here: 'Get Out' Got Snubbed at the Golden Globes and People Are Pissed

Question of the day: is it time to consider canceling mainstream movie awards altogether? Based on last night's Golden Globes, that just might be the case.

Despite being one of the most talked-about, culture-shifting films of 2017 (yes, college professors are using it in their curriculum), Get Out received no love at the 2018 Golden Globes. Despite its distinction as a social horror film by director Jordan Peele, the movie had to be strategically placed in the comedy category in order to increase it's chances to win, but to no avail. Despite being two of the highest grossing films of the year at the box office, Get Out did not receive a single award while Girls Trip wasn't even nominated. So with all that in mind, it's really no wonder that people are ready to tell the mainstream awards to get TF outta here.

First off, let's point out that within the year of it's release, Get Out transcended from being just another horror movie to a serious conversation starter. It was a conduit to deeper discussions about race relations, insidious white supremacy, code switching and everything in between. The narratives and symbolism kept people guessing, and I'd venture to say its the first time race has been the underlying theme in a mainstream horror movie.

Girls Trip raked in an astonishing $139 million worldwide. It received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and became the launch pad for Tiffany Haddish, who is currently one of the most important comedians in Hollywood today. Still, the Globes voters did not agree that it was among the standout projects of 2017.

For these reasons, you can see why people are fed up with mainstream awards shows and their repeated failure to recognize true cultural impact. Take one look at social media and well...fed up is probably an understatement for how some fans are feeling right now.

While Get Out still has a chance to score big at the Oscars, history shows that the Globes usually sets the tone for the remainder of awards season. Let's hope the Academy can course correct and give Jordan Peele his just due. Otherwise, the people will be justified in not giving these grandiose awards shows the time of day.
